AZ ELSŐ „NÉPFRONTOS" VÁLASZTÁS MAGYARORSZÁGON 1949-BEN 81 Front, and so the list of candidates was determined by the Workers' Party. Before the elections the Party ordered a total mobilisation for its members and almost a hundred thousand activists in oderd to get possibly all their voters to the polls and vote for the candidates of the Party. The first „Popular Front" elections on 15 May 1949 ended with the sweeping success of the Workers' Party, with 94,7 % of voters appearing at the polls and 95,6 % of all votes for the Popular Front, which meant that 70 % of the new MPs belonged to the Workers' Party. After the elections the activity of the local committees was suspended abruptly, and together with it that of the former coalition and liberal opposition parties, which had already become formal anyway, although no official order was passed on their suppression. The Workers' Party thus became in fact the ruling party, a state party in the true sense of the word.
