Ez egyben arra is magyarázatot nyújtana, miért maradt ki a megállapodásból Újlaki Miklós.22 0 Meglehet, hogy Szilágyi nem volt egy dörzsölt politikus, de éppen ezért ne zárjuk ki annak lehetőségét, hogy az 1458 januárjában kétszer, üdvösségét kockáztatva letett, és akaratán kívül megszegett eskü mély nyomot hagyott benne, különösen azután, hogy értesült a nádor halálának pontos körülményeiről. A modern ember nehezen tudja már elképzelni, hogy politikus is tud a lelkiismeret szavának engedelmeskedni, és az ellenkezőjére, sajnos, olyan régebbi korokból is számos példát tudnánk hozni, amikor pedig az eskü, éppen transzcendentális jellegénél fogva, komoly társadalmi-politikai köteléknek számított. Alkalmasint azonban, talán, nemcsak a források tüzetes vizsgálata lehet kifizetődő, hanem az is, ha egy-egy probléma értelmezésénél abból indulunk ki, hogy az érintetteket nem a politikai számítás, hanem az erkölcsi tisztesség vezette. THE POLITICAL HISTORY OF 1458-1459 RECONSIDERED by Tamás Pálosfalvi (Summary) The study examines the history of the first two years of king Matthias' reign in the light of virtually the entire source material. Although the thorough analysis of the unpublished charter material has also yielded important results, it was the reexamination of some of the most frequently cited sources which has proved most fruitful. The major points that the study aimed to emphasise are as follow. The king's uncle, Michael Szilágyi was, contrary to the still dominant scholarly opinion, elected as governor not for five years but only until the return of the young king from Prague. The agreement made with George Podiebrad about the marriage of his daughter with Matthias was not the decision of the latter taken under duress, but, in all probability, a conscious diplomatic step decided on by John Vitéz. News of the marriage took as a surprise both Szilágyi and palatine Ladislas Garai, who had previously agreed on the marriage of the palatine's daughter with Matthias, an agreement which secured the palatine's support for Matthias' accession to the throne. Szilágyi's position as governor lost its rationale immediately after the young king's arrival to Buda, and his leave from the court was thus only a matter of time. Thereafter, he revived the offensive stance of his late brother-in-law, John Hunyadi, against the Ottomans, and wanted to occupy the remaining part of the Serbian state. This raised the opposition of Matthias' government, led by Vitéz, who aimed at all costs to regain the Holy Crown from emperor Frederick III and unify the kingdom before turning against the Ottomans. This conflict led on the final account to the fall of Szilágyi. The fall of Szilágyi, together with other measures adopted by the king in the last weeks of 1458 at the assembly at Szeged, resulted in the alienation from Matthias of some of his leading barons, before all Jan Vitovec and Ladislas Kanizsai, and fuelled the emperor's unwillingness to restore the Holy Crown. This led to a serious political crisis, which culminated in the election of Frederick as king of Hungary in February 1459. It appeared, however, that palatine Ladislas Garai d'.ed before the election, after which Kanizsai wanted to leave the rebels, which led to an armed conflict between him and Nicholas Újlaki.
