Policy of Industrial Development and Economic Growth in Hungary, 1950-1975 by Paul Germuska Abstract The study examines industrial policy and the growth of the economy in Hungary in the „golden age" of the Western economies, that is, between 1950 and 1975. The post-war reconstruction and economic recovery had practically been completed by 1950, whereupon an unprecedented economic upswing began, which influenced very broad layers of the European societies. This upward movement was only halted by the oil crisis in 1973-1974. In order to present Hungarian industrial development, the study examines at first the most important measures of economic policy, and then analyses in detail the investment allocation which reflects most faithfully the priorities of development policy. The novelty of the study consists in the fact that it examines the distribution and realisation of investments down to the level of sub-sectors for the whole period, and corrects and refines the general series of data with the help of once secret statistics of the army and military industry In the final section of the study the author examines the relationship between industrial policy, investments and economic growth.
