THEODOR HERZL ÚJSÁGÍRÓI PÁLYÁJÁNAK FŐBB ÁLLOMÁSAI 681 Kitekintés A párizsi évek Herzl pályáját, gondolkodásmódját, identitását nagymértékben alakították. Szemtanúja volt tk. a Panama-botránynak, a Dreyfus-pernek, anarchista bombamerényleteknek, munkásmozgalmi megmozdulásoknak. Politikai, társadalmi nézeteiről, az önmagát „német íróként" definiáló beállítottságáról, saját újságírói szerepéről és felelősségéről a célország politikai történéseinek függvényében alaposan el kellett gondolkodnia. Értelmeznie kellett a zsidókérdést, ezen belül tk. az asszimilánsok, kultúrcionisták, antiszemiták nézőpontját, újságíróként a feuilleton versus vezércikk szerepét, illetve saját identitáskrízisét „német újságíróként". Újságíróként révbe ért, ugyanakkor életében egy nem tervezett fejezet kezdődött. THE MAIN STEPS IN THE CAREER OF THEODOR HERZL AS A JOURNALIST BEFORE THE NEUE FREIE PRESSE Hedvig Újvári (Abstract) An important step within the career of Herzl was the year 1891, for winning the post of correspondent at Paris for the Neue Freie Presse was obviously the peak of his journalist career. Yet the huge scholarly literature on Herzl, by now almost impossible to grasp by a single individual, pays only marginal attention to that section of the journalist career which followed the years at Pest but preceded those in Paris. The present paper aims at filling this gap through contextualisation from the point of view of the history of press of the relevant details of letters and diaries, through revealing the network of relations entertained by Herzl, and by presenting the contemporary importance of journals and individuals within it. For the young Herzl the German culture could also mean belonging to a world in which spiritual goods enjoyed absolute primacy over the material ones, and with which he wanted to identify himself. He imagined his own way of contact to consist in his being either a successful playwriter for the Burgtheater in Vienna or an interior fellow of the Neue Freie Presse. His letters from before the years in Paris reveal a constant drive to prove his abilities and a desire for, even stress of, recognition: he longed for not only quick but durable success. Although he failed to achive this as a playwriter, as a correspondent at Paris and columnist of the Neue Freie Presse he was one of the great favourites of the Viennese journal-reading public. Yet before he was finally able to gain a lasting foothold there, he had spent nearly a decade with wandering among different Viennese and German journals.
