A WITNESS OF THE WOODEN CHURCH OF VĂLENI: The Stable of Pătru Berci Albuţu — A Historical Document on the Sacred Wooden Architecture of Maramureş (Abstract) The stable built of reused timber beams of the former wooden church of Văleni is the subject of this paper. This was built in Călineşti, soon after the demolition of the church in 1947. The construction was recently transferred and saved in Văleni and it is in the care of the "Tiberiu Utan ” Cultural Association, as a reminder of the lost church. The aim of the research was to establish the documentary value of the beams of the stable. In this sense, the discussions revolve around the intricate history they recall, as well as around their potential for the research of the sacred wooden architecture in Maramureş. The value of the beams from the former wooden church was highlighted by the dendrochronological dating: they are from the first quarter of the 16lh century. Therefore, the church of Văleni is the only medieval wooden church of Maramureş which we know today how it looked like, since there are only few fragments of other saved churches dating back to this period. The various historical sources indicate that the church was first built in the monastery of Cuhea where it replaced an old stone church, founded by the illustrious family of the voyvode Bogdan. The wooden church was moved to Văleni, probably in the 1670s, where it served as a parish church until 1947. After the First World War, the wall between the women and the men was taken down, which weakened the structure under the heavy tower and seemingly led to the construction of a new church in the village, few decades later. The beams were reused then for a stable. Despite of several changes and alterations, the main original structure of the old church survived until the demolition. Outside, the church was characterized by its roof with double eaves and the slender western tower, while inside, the most remarkable feature was the narrow but high vaulted nave. The model of the roof is a characteristic of the region, and can be dated back to the Middle Ages. A closer look at the beams in the stable provides several examples of refinements in craftsmanship, certainly performed by professional carpenters specialized in sacred architecture. These observations reveal the high technical standards used in the local sacred architecture, well known in Maramureş from the end of the Middle Ages and well documented in the following centuries.
