THE ROMANIC CHURCH OF TA UŢ (Abstract)

The village of Tauţ is situated at the feet ofZarand Mountains, on the plain of Cigher River, in the eastern part of the Zarand County. The site is located on the peak of a hill, half km west to Cigher. Due to its position, the church of Tauţ dominated the whole valley of Cigher.

The earliest reference of this place can be traced in a Papal document, dated 1187, where a house belonging to the Order of the Hospitalers is mentioned at Tauţ, but, their presence in this area is not sustained by other evidences. Thus, they are mentioned helping to build a nave for the transport of salt on the Mureş River. The settlement is mentioned in the Register of Papal tithes, in 1334. Based on the archeological material excavated, a relative chronology of the site was established, dating the building between the 12'h and the 17th centuries. Prior to the church, erected
