Kiss Imola - Szőcs Péter Levente (szerk.): Arhitectura religioasă medievală din Transilvania (Satu Mare, 1999)
Prefaţă
9 Born from the desire of “rehabilitation” of an unfavourable field of History of Arts, the mediaeval architecture from Transylvania, the aim of the present volume of studies is to present the works of the symposium held at Satu Marc in December 1998. The proposed themes, gathering researchers from different fields concerning the Middle Ages: archaeologists, art historians, architects, builders, lead to a valuable change of ideas between the Romanian and Hungarian specialists convoked at Satu Mare. Specialists of european size (dr. Corina Popa, acad. dr. Marosi Ernő, dr.Adrian Andrei Rusu, dr. Németh Péter) presented architecture monuments of indisputable artistic and historic value, which (some of them disappeared) represented the starting point for the ecclesiastical buildings in the nearby areas, though we can observe in the case of the people from the Middle Age a deliberate desire of diversity. The artists of this Age were inspired by all sources without trying to get unique representations. This diversity of the medieval ecclesiastical monuments underlines the value of each one, thus becoming impossible to replace. There is a ’’feudal sensibility”, which can be found in each church, the great amount of detail adaptations, the solutions found for the particular problems proved to be fruitful in the technical field, too. There were presented monuments built in feudal spirit, which is always searching to get an advantage from the imposed compulsions and multiplies to infinit the experiences, creating a favourable climate for progress. The feudal art from Transylvania reflects exactly the builder’s aspiration to divinity, the artist designing by style, the way of overhelming the world he lives in. The artists suffered the influences of the dominant sistem of thinking, not like something exterior, but they contributed affectionately to its elaboration. The main ideea of the symposium is to underline the importance of protecting these monuments, because mediaeval ecclesiastical architecture, a living mirror of the development of Transylvania’s society, represents an inexhaustible source for the scientists. We do hope that the symposium held at Satu Mare was a promising beginning, open new horizons and a way to offer support for those who dream in order to solve the misteries which still surround the mediaeval ecclesiastical buildings from Transylvania. Hoping that the works of this symposium will continue in the autumn of 2000 at Nyíregyháza (Hungary), the participants and editors give their thanks to the Ministry of Culture, to the leadership of the Satu Mare County Museum, for the support offered in the oganization of the symposium and in the elaboration of this volume.
