Stone fragments of the rose-window of the cathedral from Alba Iulia and the reconstruction of István Möller (summán’) During the works led by István Möller at the beginning of the twentieth century’, the rose-window of the cathedral from Alba Iulia was reconstructed on the southern wall of the cross-nave, while the original fragments were gathered in the lapidarium of the cathedral. A very precise, stone-by-stone architectural survey of the inside and outside of the southern wall took place before the restauration. The documents of this survey as well as the reconstruction-plan of the rose-window have been preserved. When considering the present condition of the wall, the preserved medieval fragments and the survey documents, the following can be observed: During the construction of the southern wall of the cross-nave in the thirteenth century various changes of the plan took place. The original intention was to build columns in the corners, but only the plinths of the columns were finished. A vaulted choir was probably built, but during the restauration the arches of this vault were incorrectly reconstructed. When building the lower zone on the outside of the southern wall, the rosewindow has obviously not been taken into consideration yet. The facade was later changed and instead of the rosewindow a bipartite window with a semicircular closing was placed. Between 1908 and 1911 (?) István Möller reconstructed the rose-window with the help of the original fragments and of the existing recognizible remains left on the facade. Examining the structural details of the original fragments I reached the conclusion, that the reconstruction can be considered completely authentic. The gypsum models kept in the lapidarium allow us to conclude that the carved work used in the reconstruction is also a precise copy of the original. In raportul său din 1909,
