Strada 1 Decembrie 1918
STRADA 1 DECEMBRIE 1918-1918 DECEMBER 1 UTCA • 1 DECEMBRE 1918 STREET 1 Decembre 1918 Street The name of the street was changed several times: between 1883 and 1920, then again between 1941-1944 its name was Széchenyi, in the interwar period it was changed to Regina Maria (Queen Mary), and after World War II its name varied among Mihai I, Arţarilor and 7 Decembrie 1918 street, this last one being given to it in 1982. The street preserves many buildings of high architectural value, the most important ones are the Roman Catholic cathedral and Episcopal Palace, and the Greek-Catholic and the Orthodox cathedrals. The Episcopal Palace built in Classical style has several phases of construction. The plan was designed in 1805 by Josef Bitthauser, the architect of the Károlyi family. The building was enlarged in 1859, while the library and the wing which links it to the palace were completed only in 1892. The palace was severely affected by the 1944 bombing. At the first level of the middle wing, the Episcopal chapel is situated, built in 1908. The Greek-Catholic Cathedral of Archangels St. Michael and St. Gabriel was built between 1932 and 1937, on the site of a former church of the same cult, dating from the 18th century. The project of the church was designed by architect Victor Smighelski, while the work was supervised by G. P. Liteanu. The style of the construction combines the Byzantine ground-plan arrangement with specific Romanian architectural elements, therefore the cathedral is an important historical monument. The Orthodox Cathedral of The Assumption of the Holy Virgin was constructed between 1937 and 1938, according to the plans of architect G. P. Liteanu. The church was built in Byzantine style, with stylistic elements of the Romanian architecture. The interior painting was made in 1954. At the end of the street, the building of theTown Hall was located facing the central square. It was built in 1899 in Neoclassical style, but in the 1970s it was demolished. 117
