Supuru de Sus was defending the province of Dacia by an enemy coming from that direction. This fortification system barred the Crasna valley, which constituted the main traffic road from the Barbaricum to Dacia and has been so far investigated over a length of about 6 km. It was built in a strategic place, in a point where the valley was narrower, an area with many prehistoric sites and medieval military objectives. The dating of this fortification system is now broadly ensured by pottery fragments from the Roman Age. The strategic role of this fortified structure 40 km in front of the limes line on the Meseş Mountains was probably a borderline or a barrier on the main route of communication between the Barbaricum and Roman Dacia. Historical sources from the 19th century indicate a much greater importance of the linear fortification from Supur pointing to an entire system (yet unverified archaeologically) of such construction works in the Barbaricum west of the province of Dacia.
