Factors in the establishment of mixed marriages 567 options of the GC population they occupied a modest position. In opposition, the RC population, although representing only 12.5%, benefited of a greater attention in these options. Analysed in detail, the marital option of the GC population reveals a constant preoccupation to preserve the confessional and ethnic identity by marriage. In the first place, only 3 of the 8 parishes performed mixed marriages. In the second place, the weight of mixed marriages in the total number of marriages in the 3 parishes represents 10%. There was only one marriage outside the locality38. The ratio on sexes of preference for mixed marriages: men (15%), women (85%). 2.The Level of Diminution of ethno-confessional Compulsions in the Establishment of Marital Options at the GC Population from the Diocese of Oradea In a society with strong traditional valences, like the rural one and to a certain extend the urban society from Crisana and Satmar in the 1900s, the moral and the religious precepts in their confessional form rule the life of the community. They censor the free option in choosing the partner. On one side, the parish, the village and eventually the neighbouring localities represent the region for the marital selection. On the other side, the compulsions are multiple. In the first place, they started inside the family. The parents’ consent was absolutely necessary. The girls who did not obey their parents’ will were considered as immoral and were detested by the community where they lived. The boys who did not obey their parents’ will were deprived of the dowry and of the heritage. Breaking off the relationship with the family meant quick death. In the second place, the compulsions came from the parish. Starting from the compulsoriness of the three calls in the church, continuing with the confession of the bridegroom and of the bride and finishing with the performance of the marriage, the church possessed efficient means to persuade the young people in choosing their husband or wife. Even in the case of an extra-confessional option, the young GC had to get first the exemption of engagement given by the archpriest. Although the exemptions were given in delay, the situation changed in comparison to the end of the 38 At Vasad, the GC/HC marriage is outside the community, the girl being from Valea lui Mihai (DOSS 488/1901, f.125).
