There is no evidence which suggests a degrading aspect for Romanians in relation to the castles. In spite of this, the relationship with royalty and with its castles was the only way for the Romanian elite (‘cnezi) to maintain and confirm their privileges. In addition, when castles where built by Romanian nobles they became the expression of social status and privileges, identical with the status of other elites in the province (Hungarian nobles and Saxon ‘grdv'-s).
