The leaders of the romanian nobility between 1440 - 1514 (Abstract) The Romanians living between Tisa River and the Carpathians had greatly fallen under the rule of either the Hungarian feudals or under that of the Saxon or Szekler colonists, as it is well known. They could resist in liberty for more centuries only in some sub- Carpathian or border regions and when they were related to the free Romanians who lived beyond the Carpathians: Maramureş-Berg in the North, Hafeg- Hunedoara, Banat of Severin an Făgăraş County in the South and locally in the basins of the Western Carpathians. In these places a Romanian nobility could appear: the cnezes or the boyards and their leaders: the voivodes. The Hungarian Kings of the Anjou dinasty had frequently used the military force of these Romanians against the external danger of the Tartars and the Turks and, consequently, they gradually recognised through individual and group privileges the equality of these Romanian elite with the nobility of the kingdom. At mid the 15 th century the process off juridical assimilation was practically finished and within the nobility of the kingdom a group of Romanian nobles had been constituted: nobiles Valachi. They were not very numerous, but they had strong individuality, due to their origin, the way of owning the land, due to their language and partially due to their orthodox religion and specially due to their experience in the battles with the Ţurks at the Southern frontiers of the kingdom. 117 Pesty, Krassó, III, p.425; Idem, Szörény, III, 94. 118 Csánki, V, 246-247. 119 Pesty, Krassó, III, 512. 120 Pataki, Domeniul Hunedoara, p.
