The calendar of work (field work) was followed by church holidays and magic rituals, by beliefs and customs, many of them originating in the belief that man is submitted to supernatural forces, a mentality mostly present among the Ukrainians living in the mountain areas. The calendar customs and magic rituals of Ukrainians were synchronized with the liturgical cycle of the church over the year, the so called “the 12 holidays and fasts”. The magical and mythic beliefs depicted demons embodying images like “lisne”, krasni (beautiful forest), vidma, “bosorkania” (witch), “zbişce” (ghost-child),”vovkun”(man-wolf), “vorojili” (witches). Ukrainians and Romanians, Hungarians and other ethnic groups of the former county of Ugocea have contributed to making this wonderful land unique, by preserving their specific and passing on the cultural heritage they have received.
