(1911). Ugocea was separated in territory from Oaş, but not in material and spiritual culture, in which they have proven their harmony in this “terra”, this unique “country” that fascinated by its archaism, by the traditional clothing, dance, witty couplet created from the vitality and devotion of these simple people of Oaş. There is a saying that calls out their identity and pride for their origin: “I won’t give up being an Oşan, even if they’d give me nothing but oats”. Their dignity is inherited from the times when justice was established by the “advice of the old”; it is imprinted on their faces with wrinkles assimilated in the turmoil of life. This is how they gained their respect, even if at times their spirits would inflame: “to be from Oaş is not an insult / the heart is fire / if you set it on fire it could burn down a whole country”. It’s possible that their apparent tough spirit helped them resist in an isolated region for several centuries, but their conservatory nature has preserved the main forms of identity: language, customs, folklore, traditional costumes.
