Connections between Noble Families in the County of Ugocea. The Role of the Kindred Origin Case study: families descending from the Káta kindred (Abstract) The study researches the possible influences of the kindred origin on the behavior of noble families in a well-determined geographic and administrative unit that comprises the whole specter of the social elite: the County. In other words, if a noble family is influenced or not by its kindred origin in establishing various connections (matrimonial alliances, familiarity connections, other forms of relationship) with the county neighbors. To answer these questions, I followed three directions of investigation, centered on the Káta kindred, as a case study. The first one comprises the connections between the families of the Káta kindred and noble families with a similar kindred origin. The second one, complementary to the first, tries to determine the behavioral mechanisms of the Káta descendents in establishing connections with noble families of non-kindred origin. The purpose of the second direction is to exclude patterns revealed by the first investigation, which could prove to be non-specific. The third research direction comprises the careers of different members of the noble families with kindred origin that could determine a predilection for following certain types of careers. Despite the complexity of the examples offered above, the study revealed that no behavior pattern can be proved for the noble families with kindred origin in their manner of establishing connections with the other members of the social elite. Nevertheless, the analysis revealed that in the 14th and 15th centuries, the conflicts are frequent between neighbors, and that they are deeper if the two rival families have a similar economic status. Not the different origin is the main cause of peaceful/adversarial relations between noble families, but much more obvious causes, such as economical rivalry and casual quarrels between neighbors.
