Blom (Figs 7, 8) Differs from subsp. brunnescens in the following characters. Plants larger, medium­sized. Central strand of few cells or absent. Hair-point not distinctly longer in subpe­richaetial leaves, more finely spinulose, 0.25-0.9 mm. Leaves of different shape (Figs 5A and 7A), often with ridge-like plicae (Fig. 7F, G), costa stronger (58-90 urn wide versus 45-60 urn wide in central part of subsp. brunnescens), 3-4 stratose in upper and 5-6 stra­tose in lower part (Fig. 7F, G). Sporophytes sparse. Urn length/width ratio 1.4-1.6-1.9 (BLOM 1996), in Hungarian material (1.3-) 1.48 ±0.08(-1.6), n = 7. Peristome teeth 190-320(-370) urn, orange, less perforated than in subsp. brunnescens (Figs 51, 71). Habitat: Exposed dry calcareous rocks.
