triplostichous, isostichous to tylacanthous. Spine-cells short, acute, from 0.05-0.15 mm long, and solitary. Stipulodes in both rows, upper up to 0.6 mm and lower to 0.3 mm. 8-12 branchlets in a whorl, 16-34 mm long, 1-1.5 times the length of the internodia. 6-11 segments on each branchlet. End-segment 1-2 celled, 0.6-2.0 mm long. End-cell acute, 0.1-0.6 mm long. Bract-cells verticillate. Anterior bractcells and bracteoles 0.75-1.25 mm long, posterior bract-cells papillous to 0.75 mm long. Generally richly fertile. Oogonium 1.0 mm long, 0.5 mm wide, with 12 spiral cells. Coronula 0.075-0.15 mm long, 0.15-0.2 mm wide. Oospores 0.7 mm long, 0.45 mm wide, and black. Ripe oospores have been found throughout the year. Antheridia are 0.25-0.35 mm in diameter. Two forms have been separated: 1. Chara zeylanica f. elegáns A. Braun, which was found in a drain near Sanghar, 3.5.1998. Strongly encrusted. Spinecells dense and up to 1.6 mm long in young internodes. On older internodes, spine-cells scattered and only up to 1.0 mm long. This form exhibits low fertility. 2. Chara zeylanica f. curassavica (A. Braun) H. et J. Groves, which is found in spring water in Loani, 12.10.1999., it has both totally and partly ecorticated branchlets, and is fertile at lowest branchlet nodes. Specimens with this distinguishing mark can be referred to as Chara diaphana Meyen (see also WOOD 1965). CHOUDHARY (1969) has discussed the forms found in India. A revision of the Chara zeylanica complex is strongly needed. Ecology and distribution: Chara zeylanica appears to be the most common species in Pakistan (Fig. 11). Normally in freshwater, but also found in brackish water (loc. 1 ). According to ZANEVELD ( 1940) this is not common, but is reported from India (DIXIT 1931). The species is common in India (PAL et al. 1962). Chara globularis Thuill. (= Chara fragilis Desv.) Localities (5): 1. Prov. Karakoram (Kashmir, India), Nagar village (altitude 2300 m), 10.9.1960, leg.: O. Polunin (BG); 2. Prov. Sindh: Hyderabad: River Indus at Chalgari pond (Mitari), 20.2.1998; 3. Prov. Sindh: Karachi, Hub dam, 11.3.1998, 29.11.1999; 4. Prov. Sindh: Thatta, Kinjhar lake, 24.2.1998; 5. Prov. Sindh: Thatta, Sonda pond, 24.2.1998. References to Pakistan: FARIDI (1955), PAL et al. (1962). General: Chara globularis is a monoecious, triplostichous, isostichous species. Spine-cells and stipulodes papillous. Comments on studied plants: 8-15 cm high, with moderately encrusted axes to 0.5 mm in diameter and internodia of up to 3 cm in length. Cortex regularly triplostichous and isostichous. Spine-cells papillous and difficult to see in older internodes. Stipulodes papillous and in two rows. 6-8 branchlets in each whorl, to
