Denchev, C. M.: A new record of Hungarian Ustilaginales
Studia bot. hung. 26, pp. 5-6, 1995 A NEW RECORD OF HUNGARIAN USTILAGINALES C. M. DENCHEV Institute of Botany, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences 23 Acad. G. Bonchev Str. BG-1 113 Sofia, Bulgaria Microbotryum violaceo-verrucosum is reported as new to Hungary. Key words: Microbotryum violaceo-verrucosum, Ustilaginales, anthericolous smuts During revision of specimens of Microbotryum from BP (Microfungi Collection, Hungarian Natural History Museum, Budapest) an additional species to Hungarian anthericolous smuts was found, viz. Microbotryum violaceo-verrucosum. Dimensions of ustilospores, measured in lactophenol (heated to boiling point, then cooled) by oil immersion, are given in the form (smallest observed-) mean ± standard deviation (-largest observed), n = 100 (DENCHEV 1993). Microbotryum violaceo-verrucosum (Brandenb. et Schwinn) Vanky Mycotaxon 33: 372. 1988. Type on Süene italica (L.) Pers., Italy (HUV). Sori in the anthers powdery, dark purple, livid purple or livid vinaceous (according to RAYNER 1970). Ustilospores globose, subglobose, ovoid or broadly ellipsoidal, (5.5-) 6.2+0.5 (-7.5) x (5-) 5.5±0.4 (-6.5) |nm; the exospore verruculose, the warts c. 0.3-0.5 (im high (Fig. 1). Specimen examined: On Silène bupleuroides L. subsp. bupleuroides - Hungary, Mt Pismány-hegy, Szentendre near Budapest, alt. c. 150 m, 29.VII.1933, leg. A. Pénzes (as Silene longiflora), BP 2824. The specimen was determined by G. Moesz as Ustilago violacea (Pers.) Fuckel. There is a label with Moesz' s remark (measurements 5.5-6.6 |im) and a figure of reticulate spore. In fact the exospore is verruculose. VÁNKY (1985) in his monograph, concerning smut fungi in the Carpathian area, including whole Hungary, treated M. violaceo-verrucosum (as Ustilago violaceo-verrucosa) as expecting species to this region. The present material was listed among the hosts of U. violacea (Pers. : Pers.) Roussel as a single specimen
