1. Session / Séance. Experiences gained, current Situation, future Prospects / Expériences acquises, Situation actuelle, Perspectives futures - Discussion / Interventions

Well, you see we have reached the philosophical or human level of cooperation, we know how to do it because of our experiences in management, at conferences, etc. But you know, in Russia we were brought up in a purely materialistic spirit of Marxism. That’s the reason why I think without financial support all this cooperation will end in very lovely and very social conversation, but nothing else. I am in favor of practical steps, for example stages for younger employees of the archives. In Russian history we have a nice example: Czar Peter the Great traveled to Holland and when he came back he reformed Russia; but unfortunately archivists are neither czars nor emperors, and they have little authority to change even the situation in the archives. According to the experience with our younger employees, the result of such stage is that they go abroad and stay in the guest country for a month, they have new experiences and see the nice equipment like computers; when they came back they complain about the miserable education and the poor situation in Russian archives. - At least, they leave the archives and try to earn money in the field of free enterprise. This is one of the results of such stages. Of course, I am in favor of sending people abroad, but often this kind of exchange of experience bet75
