1. Session / Séance. Experiences gained, current Situation, future Prospects / Expériences acquises, Situation actuelle, Perspectives futures - Csendes, Peter: Cooperation between the Successor States of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy / Coopération entre les Etats Successeurs de la Monarchie austro-hongroise (english 59 - français 66)

1. Session/Séance: Csendes, Cooperation between the Successor States Another aspect of presentation and cooperation is the exchange of exhibitions. There have been such projects already in Upper Austria (the permanent exhibition of the Provincial Archives was sent to Trebon) and especially in Styria, where all the archives of Graz made a common presentation at Maribor and Ptuj in Slovenia in 1991. There will be a corresponding exhibition from Slovenia in Graz in the future. A special exhibition of the Provincial Archives of Styria, mainly dedicated to problems of restoration, was shown in Pecs in Hungary in 1992. In the same year the Municipal and Provincial Archives of Vienna presented a small exhibition about the famous biographer Constant von Wurzbach in Ljubljana17. For 1994 an exhibition „Vienna and Slovenia“ in Ljubljana and Vienna, accompanied by a bilingual publication, is planned in cooperation between the Municipal and Provincial Archives of Vienna and the Archives of Slovenia. Not directly connected with our subject are the activities of archives in the cultural commission of ARGE Alp, a multilateral cooperation of regions of Germany (Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg), Switzerland (St. Gallen, Graubünden, Tessin), Austria (Vorarlberg, the Tyrol, Salzburg) and Italy (Southern Tyrol, Trentino, Lombardia) or in CIBAL. In the ARGE Alp, where only parts of the former Monarchy are represented, the archives keep close contacts in regular annual conferences to exchange information and communicate experiences on questions of legal matters, records management, preservation etc. An interesting project is a common guide to archives. These regions also work together on historical symposia and publications18, issues in which the archives have a leading role too. The contacts between the Provincial Archives in Innsbruck and Bolzano/Bozen and also to the Trentino need not be mentioned, but due to the provenance of special groups of private archives, there are also connections in the form of research and microfdm projects between the Trentino and the Provincial Archives of Carinthia in Klagenfurt. Future contacts on archival level may result from the Central European Initiative, a multilateral convention founded in 1990 as Pentagonale for cooperation in the fields of culture and science, and which by now consists of Austria, Croatia, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary, Italy, Poland and Slovenia19. In CIBAL (Centre international d’information sur les sources de l’histoire balkanique et méditerranéenne) on the other hand, countries take part according to their geographical position, only some of them being successor states of the Monarchy. The main goal of CIBAL is historical research in general, not necessarily archival work. The collection, publication or dissemination in form of microfilms of historical documents are the main activities, but also training courses in techniques of research may be organized. 17 The exhibition was planned in cooperation between the Archives of Vienna and the Austrian Academy of Science in 1991. 18 There exists since 1965 an Informationsblatt / Bolletino di informazione. 19 There are annual meetings on a predominantly diplomatic level; the Austrian Academy of Science is involved and by that medium there is a slight contact of the Municipal and Provincial Archives of Vienna with that organization. 63
