Pedro Gonzalez: In my personal opinion, I believe that the archives have been the poor brother of the information, and we have to come out of this situation. If every library of every university of every province has access to the international networks, why should the archives not join this communcation system?

Antoine Fleury: Voilà une réponse à un point de vue peut-être réalisto-pessi- miste, n’est-ce pas. Mais c’est vrai que nous sommes les enfants pauvres dans les sciences humaines déjà, les archivistes encore plus que les historiens professionnels. Nous sommes les enfants pauvres de l’informatique et nous sommes en retard, et c’est de notre faute. C’est de notre faute et je pense que Pedro Gonzalez doit être encouragé à poursuivre dans cette direction et justement la coopération internationale est importante pour sensibiliser nos autorités que c’est important.

Nous à l’université, nous avons ce problème, nos étudiants maintenant connaissent l’informatique, mais ne savent pas l’utiliser en ce qui concerne l’histoire, il l’utilisent pour la documentation actuelle, mais pour l’histoire c’est aux archivistes de leur donner les moyens, aux professeurs d’inciter les étudiants. Par certaines initiatives en Suisse nous avons fait le même constat que vous, peu d’utilisateurs des documents originaux par manque de connaissances et surtout du corp enseignant, des professeurs qui sont en retard de 10 ans et les archivistes - certains sont en avance par rapport aux historiens, aux enseignants -, donc c’est le problème des „teachers“.

Kurt Peball: Ich bin davon überzeugt, daß die Zukunft für die Geschichtsforschung, aber auch für die Archivare die Archivierung von magnetischen Aufzeichnungen auf Disketten bzw. moderne Informationsträger als Geschichtsquellen sein wird. Aber ich muß Ihnen, Herr Gonzälez, folgende Frage stellen: Haben Sie Überlegungen über die Haltbarkeit der magnetischen Speicherung angestellt? Ich meine hier das Trägermaterial, etwa die Haltbarkeit einer CD-ROM oder einer Diskette, um es ganz einfach zu formulieren. Papier, Papyrus oder Pergament kennen wir seit vielen Jahrhunderten, mit all den bekannten Problemen der Konservierung und Restaurierung, aber die grundsätzliche Frage hier betrifft die Haltbarkeit der magnetischen Speicherung und nicht die unterschiedlichen EDV-Systeme. In welchem Zeitraum etwa muß man mit Umkopierung oder Neukopierung rechnen, ist dies ähnlich wie bei Mikrofilmen?

Pedro Gonzälez: The situation is very different at this moment. The present problem is not durability of the media (maybe 5, 10, 20 or hundred years) but obsolescence. In order to recopy information to new systems, you need investment, you need a strategy plan to store and preserve your information in the new media. Some months ago, I have read a paper from the Commission on Preservation and Access of the USA, and they say that today preserving means recopying for the new documents. To follow this advice you are obliged to go with the movement of the new technological advances.- This is the real problem.
