technological aspects which are not easy, such as the introduction of fibre optics on a massive scale. In actual fact the development towards ISDN is very varied, and while in some countries it is at a very advanced stage, in others it has scarcely begun, even though all the Administrations and operating companies (PTT’s) recognize ISDN as the objective to be achieved, due to the better quality and enormous variety of services it will provide, with greater efficiency at a reasonable cost. 4. Session/Séance: Gonzalez, Data Bases and long distance Communcation Annex 2 The Telecommunications Infrastructure in Spain 1. The IBERPAC Network In Spain both the Switched Telephone Network (STN), and the Packet Switching Network (PSDN) have up to now been the responsibility of the state monopoly TELEFONICA SA, which at the present moment is also carrying out the introduction of new services and a new infrastructure, which implies the arrival of the new type of ISDN networks. The Spanish Public Network of Data Transmission by packet switching is the IBERPAC network, which is linked up with more than 100 similar networks, both public and private, all over the world through their International Data Nodes, using high speed X-75 connections. Access to IBERPAC, both for suppliers and users of the information, can be obtained by the following routes: 1. For terminals which work in „packet mode“, with a dedicated line, through standard X-25 of the CC1TT, at speeds of 1200 to 64 000 b/s. 2. For terminals which do not work in „packet mode“, also using a dedicated line, using standard X-28, with speeds up to 1200 b/s and the SDLC protocol, for speeds from 1.200 to 64 000 b/s. 3. Through the Switched Telephone Network (STN), access is also possible to the IBERPAC network, using Protocol X-28, with speeds of up to 1200 b/s (modems V.21 and V.22 of the CCITT), in this case for outgoing calls (through this systems there is access to the network, but from another point there is no access to the computer which uses this form of access). 4. Another additional service, through standard X-32. Terminals which work in „packet mode“ might gain access to the IBERPAC network through RTC, with ingoing and outgoing call services and speeds of up to 2400 b/s, with a modem which adhered to the CCITT’s the V.22 bis standard. 340
