Discussion - Interventions Hans Hofmann: Thank you very much, Mr. van Boven. I think we got a lot of information about the Dutch point of view concerning mobility of archivists. You mentioned that young archivists, in particular, are eager to learn abroad. I really confirm this statement because of my own experiences since the European Community started in 1952 with the first institution, the High Authority of the European Coal and Steel Community; I remember, when I became an official in Brussels in 1981, we had all those Dutch influence in our context, and realize all the time that there is a strong Dutch influence in the past of the European Community’s archives. You said that with the single market of 1992 we have this free movement for different professions including certainly the archivists. And that should be improved. You said, that they don’t get good post offers, and this is an important point to consider in this forum here. Thirdly, you mentioned, we should think over the recognition of diplomas within the countries of the EC. Now, the mobility plan is more or less an encouragement to invest more in younger generation if I understood correctly. I see that you have some sort of a similar attitude and I will give you the floor to discuss both exposés we heard this afternoon Ugo Cova: Ich kann aus Erfahrung sagen, daß die italienische Archivverwaltung verschiedenen Archivaren oft die Gelegenheit gegeben hat, ins Ausland zu fahren, um dort die Quellen zu studieren, die verschiedene Teile des heutigen Italien betreffen. Es ist bekannt, daß Teile Italiens unter spanischer, österreichischer oder fanzösi- scher Regierang standen und sich deshalb die Akten dieser Zentralbehörden in Wien, in Simancas oder Paris befinden. Ich kann sagen, daß in den letzten 20 Jahren viele Inventare über diese Quellen in Italien veröffentlicht worden sind. Weitere Arbeiten in dieser Richtung sind im Gange, was nichts anderes bedeutet, daß viele italienische Archivare die Gelegenheit haben, sich weiterzubilden und interessante Kontakte zu Archiven und Archivaren in Österreich, Spanien und Frankreich zu pflegen. Paule René-Bazin: Je voulais simplement dire que depuis très longtemps, en France, on se préoccupe, non pas peut-être des mobilités, mais de mettre au contact d’étrangers, les jeunes français qui vont devenir archivistes et depuis maintenant plus de 40 ans, tous les ans, nous recevons un stage qui nous permet, quand nous sortons de l’Ecole des Chartes, et avant de commencer à travailler, de confronter, non pas notre expérience, puisque nous n’en avons pas à ce moment là, mais d’écouter l’expérience des autres. Ce qui me semble avoir profondément marqué les générations d’archivistes qui maintenant se trouvent en fonction en France. Une expérience plus récente vient compléter celle-ci. Depuis deux ans, les élèves qui vont devenir archivistes vont passer un mois, avant de prendre leurs fonctions, dans un pays étranger. Nous ne pouvons pas encore tirer les conclusions de cette expérience. Il n’y a qu’une promotion qui en a profité, la deuxième va le faire le mois prochain. 312
