2. Session/Séance: Discussion - Interventions Regionen einen Wunsch in diese Richtung gibt, werden wir sicher versuchen, einem solchen Wunsch zu entsprechen. Maria Pia Rinaldi Mariani: I would like to stress some practical solutions that we experienced in our mainly bilateral agreements that could be very feasible for the responsible in the state archives organization. First of all, I would like to quote the agreement that we had with the National Archives and Record Service in Washington about microfilming an entire fonds of documents dealing with the last two years of World War II. This particular project that has been mentioned by Mr. Körmendy in the general report is not impressive in my opinion because of the budget investment, but it could be interesting because the drafting of the project chose particular options. Instead of sending a couple of colleagues to Washington, lets say for 10 years, to pick up and select all the records from this particular fonds which could be interesting for us, we preferred to sign an agreement, a seven year agreement. It is part of the contract that the entire fonds would be microfilmed in a double negative, so that we could make the inventory and the indexing on our own at home. Of course, we decided a lot. We had to negotiate the standards of the microfilming, because it was not just a plain microfilm. The colleagues from the United States had to implement a system for picking up flowing and bleeping to include all the folders of the dossier that we were interested in, included in the microfilming also the card files they had, etc. At least, we are pretty satisfied with the results because a constant flow of microfilm rolls is coming to the National Archives of Italy and we are indexing according to our interest in a very cosy and easy way. That was a very different approach to the microfilming a record related to one nation’s history. It is very different from the German option or the Japanese option for microfilming the captured records in Alexandria. I know that Klaus Oldenhage will speak about this afternoon, but I would like to quote a second instance. This is the Guide to the Sources for the History of Spain and Italy. We agreed to settle on a standard for description, a standard for exchanging data on the basis, of course, of information technology processing of data. And that could be expanded, and it is beeing expanded, as far as I know by the Spanish colleagues, to other countries, in describing records at the level of a serie. Thirdly, I would like to quote another example (It is not entirely an Italian example but it includes Italian archives - Monsignore Burns will forgive me). I am quoting the Guide to the Vatican Archives, which includes the Rome State Archives, records that have been described by a team that is funded and supported by the Bentley Historical Library in Michigan and by the Paul Getty Endowment, as far as I know, maybe they have some other sponsors. This is an interesting example, for instance, of a description standardizing, suitable perhaps in other countries and other systems, and to other needs.
