Behind all these changes and the debates they generate, one frequently finds explicitly and more often implicitly a two-dimensional, „carto-graphic“ world view where belonging is represented by a patchwork of bounded spaces. But this spatial perception of Self has started to be challenged by the new communication techniques which tend to abrogate space and time. Recent ethnographical research on diasporas and their use of the Internet ÇNym, forthcoming) to communicate as well more traditional research on consumption and globalisation show the emergence of new boundaries and new divisions in terms of „access“ (Rifkin, 2000) to the metaphoric space of the so-called ,,7th continent“ formed by the Web and its services. These totally new forms of borders and boundaries in terms of electronic „gates“ and „platforms“ are already starting to generate specific cultural groups as well as to create new barriers between those who are „within“ and those who remain „outside“. It might be the task of future European ethnologists to study these virtual borders and eventually to attempt an ethnocartography „mapping out“ these new networking communities in cyberspace.
