Jacob J.T. Doedens Abstract This short study pays attention to the description in the Gospel of Mark (and Matthew) that during the lawsuit of the Sanhedrin, Jesus was charged with blasphemy. The article concludes that not the fact that Jesus acknowledges to be the “son of God” has to be seen as a form of blasphemy. In that case the high priest also could have been accused, because he himself worded the question whether Jesus saw himself as the “son of the Blessed” (Mark 14,61). Here, the expression “son of God / son of the Blessed” most probably has to be understood as being a messianic title. For the high priest, the blasphemy was proven when Jesus not only confessed himself to be the Messiah, but also identified himself with the “son of man” from Daniel 7,13-14.
