A bibliai törvény szerepe Kálvinnál.. Abstract The role of the biblical law in Calvin’s theology, in the light of his Catechism, Institutes and Commentaries I. John Hesselink states ’For Calvin, the law is a dynamic entity primarily expressive of the gracious will of God for the benefit of his people’. The main objective of this paper is to examine the role of the biblical law in Calvin’s theology, with special regard to his works, namely Catechism I-II, Institutes and Commentaries on the Romans and Hebrews. The result of this present research can be summarized as follows: Law is not in contrast with grace. Calvin interprets the law in the context of the covenant of grace, and not only as catalogues of moral doctrine. Considering the law as an organic part of the covenant, Calvin does not examine the law for itself, but with the grace in the salvation. Thus the law finds its end, its goal and its completion in Christ, as does the covenant with Israel. The „new” and the „old” covenant are the same and only differ in form, their substance is always grace and redemption. Declaring 2009 and 2014 to Calvin’s Memorial Years, the Hungarian Reformed Churched is paying tribute to the memory of the outstanding reformer, John Calvin. It needs to be added, the present writer has intention of joining this event. Sárospataki Füzetek 18. évfolyam 201412 59
