Fodorné Nagy Sarolta Abstract Members of the body of Christ in everyday life Lecture, given at a regional ecumenical conference for women in Hernád- németi, on the 5th of October, 2013. Related to the central topic of the conference: Romans 12,1-8. What does it mean to be a woman? Many kind of answers were given to this question especially in the past decades from the point of view of the liberal movements, of the labour movements or latest by the ideology of the consuming society. 1. We find our identity, our real selves as women in Jesus Christ. Was the wife of Pilate a good wife or not? Endless debate could be opened about whether a wife can get a word in her husbands office especially if he has such a high position. But it becomes a simple question in connection the trial of Jesus. She ’saw’ Jesus - yet in dream - and gave an exceptionally good advice to Pilate! Good deeds are not good deeds in themselves! We would say, exhortation is a good thing. But let us think of the wife of Job or Jezebel, wife of Ahab. The first said: „Curse God and die!” - encouragement to get die! (Job 2,9). Jezebel said to Ahab: “Why is your spirit so vexed that you eat no food? Do you now govern Israel? Arise, and eat bread, and let your heart be cheerful; I will give you the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite” (lKings,21,5-7)- you are the boss, you can do it! It can happen that best things turn up to be sin in relation to the Word. Working hard might be a self-show too! We must not do everything that we can do, but we must do everything that others can not do. Too much work can mean also that we take others’ mission away and, doing so we cause them to find their life meaningless. We can test the value of our deeds through Christ: are they in harmony with the spirituality of Jesus? 2. We are assigned for a service; it is not us, who choose - or select (!) - it! The field of service is hidden in: a, ), the order of creation, like giving birth and taking care for our household (cf. ITim 5). b. ) our personal lot. Here we recpectfully remember of the widows of the martyrs who were put to death at the end of the fight for freedom in 1848-49 in Arad. Let them be paragons of how our fate can offer those special tasks that we can do more effectively than anybody else. 122 Sárospataki Füzetek 17. évfolyam I 2013 | 4
