Sárai Szabó Katalin Abstract Women’s participation in the Reformed Church in the first half of the 20th century - Maria Pilder’s life By the time between the two world wars, women’s participation in all areas of charity work was generally accepted. Their active participation was not considered unusual or strange anymore in the everyday life of the Reformed Church. Two areas remained unapproachable to them: they were not allowed to be pastors, and had no chance to get into church legislation and decision-making. Briefly saying, they could not become part of the church leadership. Seeing the active presence of women, Church leaders realized the necessity of not only their education but the organization of their work as well. As the consequence of this, they wanted to coordinate the independently operating women’s associations, and to create a unified program and management for them. Maria Pilder (1888-1966), who was elected secretary of the National Presbyterian Women’s Association in 1944, played an important role in this process. She was a highly educated lady who corresponded with Hermann Kutterrel and translated the works of Karl Barth. 30 Sárospataki Füzetek 17. évfolyam I 2013 I 4
