Eperjes mint a Felső-Magyarországi evangélikus művelődés központja ... Abstract Eperies as an Upper-Hungarian Lutheran education center in the 16th-17th centuries In the decade of the Reformation, Eperjes (Presov) was a significant free royal town and had a school of good standards. The settlements of German, Hungarian and Slovakian citizens followed the Augsburg Confession. The self-confident town took meticulous care of improving its school. Outstanding teachers were chosen such as the poet and ambassador Johannes Bocatius. In 1666, the Lutheran noblemen and citizens founded a College with high academic standards, gaining the favour and support of prominent foreigners like the king of Sweden. The town and the College suffered a lot from the Habsburg-Catholic persecution. In the middle of the 1670s, the school and the churches were obtained by military violence. Although the citizens could get them back twice taking advantage of the favourable historical turns, finally they had no other choice but to give into the political force in 1711. While the College could function in peace, it educated outstanding young men for the Lutheran Church and Hungary. Sárospataki Füzetek 17. évfolyam 2013 I 3 91
