Rácsok Gabriella Abstract POSTMODERN RELIGIOSITY AND MEDIA SATURATION After presenting the main characteristics of postmodern, the study describes post­modern religiosity relying on Arnaldo Nesti’s categories that speak about a no­madic condition, the dominance of silence, the need for more emotional rites, and the feeling of uncertainty or insignificance. The individualistic features are illus­trated by such marks as coffee shop religiosity or mixture of religions. There is, however, a form of postmodern religiosity that stands closer to institutional, tradi­tional religiosity with the distinctive character of treating religion as a form of en­tertainment. The process of mediatisation is explained by the threefold function of media as channel, language and environment. Identity formation seems to be a point of connection for media and religion, since it is in the process of identity formation that media and religion interact. Identity formation is strongly linked with meaning construction in the process religious development. For those exam­ining the resources of this process outside traditional institutional religions tend to turn to Clifford Geertz’s definition of religion. One example is John Lyden who applies Geertz’ definition of religion as a set of symbols to films as well. However, these quasi religious functions of film are more linked to the narrative of films rather than the visual effects or imagery representation.
