Abstract JÁNOS KOMÁROMI - BORN 120 YEARS AGO The author provides a general introduction to the life of writer and journalist János Komáromi, a former student of the Sárospatak Reformed College. Komáromi was one of the most popular, widely read and celebrated authors of his time. In his historic novels he narrated some episodes of the past of the Hungarian nation with sound historic realism and profound social sensitivity. He recorded his personal war experiences in novels as well as in short stories, in which the characters speak in the author’s more subjective and lyric voice, still reality is presented in an objective style. Komáromi was not philosophising in his writings. It was the story and not the interpretation of the story that was important to him. It is easy to remember and retell his stories. He was not writing as a psychologist, but writing was a personally experienced therapy for him. Komáromi’s folklore world is also worth analysing; it communicates extremely interesting and precious information. By reading his works the richness and the harmony of Hungarian folk traditions are opened up to the reader. Komáromi used his mother tongue with honest humility. He had learnt quality, morality and humanity in the Sárospatak school, and had such an empathic way of seeing which made him able to write about the people of Upper-Hungary in a natural voice and flavoursome style. 2010/3 Sárospataki Füzetek 77
