THE MESSENGER Newsletter of the Kossuth Club December 2008. Vol. 14. No. 12. Hungarian Christmas Bazaar and Bake Sale. The November 15 event exceeded all expectations thanks to the outstanding organizational skills of Erika Thiringer and Zsuzsa Deák. The “honor roll” of everyone who helped is listed on page 5. We apologize if inadvertently we left out anybody! Torn from the Flag in Sarasota. On 29 October the Hungarian Medical Association of America, Inc. and the Hungarian American Cultural Association, Inc., a.k.a. The Kossuth Club of Sarasota presented the first screening in the State of Florida “Torn from the Flag,” the feature length documentary film about the historical impact of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. In her opening remarks Éva Kisvarsányi emphasized that the Hungarian émigrés who contributed to the production of this independent film can be regarded as its “co-producers.” All those who marched on the streets of Budapest on October 23 1956 and fought the invading Soviet tanks are its “stars” because they made history. Dr. Tamás Peredi, president of the Medical Association, expressed his hope that joint programs with the Kossuth Club will follow in the future. After the screening filmmaker Klaudia Kovács met with the audience and answered questions. A native of Eger, Ms. Kovács was not even bom yet at the time of the revolution but she was determined to produce an English-language film about it to inform and educate her generation both in the United States and abroad. Nine years of her life went into the production and against all odds, this young woman of Eger has succeeded making a quality film we can all be proud of. December Programs. On Sunday December 7 at 4:00 PM we will meet in the Church of the Cross (3005 S. Tuttle Ave., Sarasota). Visitors from Transylvania, József Gazda and Ilona Bernád will meet with the Hungarian community during their short stay in Sarasota. Due to the courtesy of the Reverend Péter Pál Bodor, Pastor of the Hungarian Ecumenical Church we were able to secure the date following the regular monthly church service. Please join us for an interesting program about the csángó Hungarians. On Thursday, December 18 at 4:30 PM in the Selby Library the Kossuth Club celebrates Christmas with an informal get-together. We’ll sing traditional Christmas carols and share the joys of the season. Please bring along some goodies and good cheer. The Club will provide drinks.
