Tiltakozó Levél. A Kossuth Klub 75 tagjának aláírásával március 29.-én az alább idézett levelet küldtük el az Európai Unió Emberi Jogi Bizottsága kormánybiztosának Strasbourgba: “Dear Commissioner Hammarberg: The latest disturbing news from the European Union is that in Romania the ultra-nationalist “New Right” legionnaire organization and the Sarmisegetuza Foundation organized a fascist anti-Hungarian demonstration. The shameful event happened in Cluj (Kolozsvár), a city in western Romania where a substantial number of the population is Hungarian. On the 15th of March members of the Hungarian ethnic minority wanted to observe the 160th anniversary of the 1848 revolution and freedom fight against the Habsburg Empire, a cultural and historic tradition. The organized demonstration against the Hungarian minority was drastic and brutal, and, as an added insult, was permitted by the mayor. One high school student was beaten senseless for attempting to participate in this anniversary tradition. Unfortunately, this latest atrocity against the Hungarian ethnic minority in Romania is not an isolated incident but part of a long series of events dating back decades and is apparently condoned by leading politicians in that country. Such hate crimes in the European Union are shameful and intolerable. The EU has the responsibility to uphold and protect the democratic freedoms and human rights of all its citizens, especially those of its largest ethnic minority. We, American citizens of Hungarian descent in southwest Florida, join the ranks of those who raise their voices for the universal application of decency and human rights for all the citizens of the European Union. We condemn ethnic cleansing and discrimination in all its forms.
