THE MESSENGER Newsletter of the Kossuth Club February 2006. Vol. 12. No. 2. 1956-2006—Half a Century. At the request of the Office of the Governor we submitted a draft to proclaim October 23 2006 Hungarian Freedom Fighter’s Day in Florida. The Steering Committee asked Lily Farkas to serve as Press Secretary and keep the local media informed about the 1956 Hungarian revolution and the Kossuth Club's preparations to observe the 50th anniversary. Lily and Imre Farkas were political prisoners in Hungary during the 1950’s and received the “For a Free Hungary” plaque and silver cross in 2000 from then Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. Ambassador Geza Jeszenszky delivered the certificate and medal to them in Sarasota. 56 Stories. The Hungarian American Coalition and Lauer Learning published personal recollections from the Hungarian revolution submitted to the wivw.FreedoinFighetr56.com web site. The volume includes about 30 stories and will be followed later this year by an expanded edition. We quote from the foreword: “This collection of personal stories from 1956 is dedicated to all who dreamt and fought for freedom from Soviet domination in the Hungarian Revolution. By honoring their memory we, Hungarian Americans, wish to pay homage and remind the world 50 years later of the hope, courage and sacrifice of those Hungarian Freedom Fighters whose heroic resistance revealed for the first time the terrible face of communism, and hastened its eventual collapse. ” The February Program.
