THE MESSENGER Newsletter of the Kossuth Club August-September 2006. Vol. 12. No. 6-7. The flag above symbolizes the ideals of the Hungarian revolution. In protest against Soviet occupation and Communist dictatorship, on October 23 1956 Hungarians tore the hated Soviet-style coat of arms out of the national flag leaving a gaping hole in the middle of the red, white and green tricolor. They later replaced it with the royal, or the 1848 Kossuth coat of arms. 1956-2006—Half a Century. During the month of May we presented several lectures and documentary films about the 1956 Hungarian Revolution in area schools and clubs as part of the Operation Outreach—1956 program. Press secretary Lily Farkas has arranged for a series of page-long articles in the May, June and July issues of Attitudes magazine about the revolution and its survivors now living in the Sarasota area. More press and media events are scheduled for September and October, including an interview with Cliff Roles on Radio Station 1220 AM. In honor of the revolution Leif Bjaland, conductor of the Florida West Coast Symphony scheduled the performance of Kodály’s Galánta Dances on one of the concerts of the 2006-2007 season. Florida governor Jeb Bush has greeted members of the Kossuth Club in a letter hailing the 50th anniversary of the Hungarian Revolution. He emphasized that “Hungarians contribute to Florida 's social mosaic and to its economic growth ” and acknowledged the bonds of friendship between the people of Hungary and the people of Florida. 50lh Anniversary Programs.
