THE MESSENGER Newsletter of the Kossuth Club December, 2004. Vol. 10. No. 9. Donations. The October fund raising for the Albert Wass Hungarian School in Sarasota resulted in a $500.00 donation to that school. As of January 2004 the Kossuth Club has donated a total of $10,000.00 to schools and as scholarships. Of this amount, $7,700.00 was donated to Hungarian students in Transsylvania. We thank our members for demonstrating their continuing support of the club’s activities and of Hungarian minority schools in the Carpathian basin in spite of increasingly difficult circumstances. István Varga Memorial Fund. Our long-time member and supporter Dr. István Varga passed away in October. He will long be remembered for his kindness and generosity, and for his masterful paintings that decorate many homes and museums in Sarasota and all over the world. According to his last wish his widow Dona Varga designated the Kossuth Club to receive memorial donations in his name. The funds collected will be donated to a Hungarian school in Transsylvania. Ecumenical Church Service. The Hungarian Christian Church of Sarasota will hold its December service on Sunday, December 5 at 3:00 PM in the Church of the Cross, 3005 South Tuttle Avenue. The Reverend Péter Pál Bodor will officiate. There will be coffee and pastries served after the service and everyone are welcome. We have not yet received information about Christmas services by the Sarasota area Hungarian churches when this issue of the newsletter went to the printers. December Program. You are cordially invited to our program on Thursday December 9 at 4:30 PM in the Selby Library (1331 First Street, Sarasota). Our speaker is Marika Rózsahegyi, granddaughter of the Hungarian actor, the late Kálmán Rózsahegyi (1873- 1961). Ms. Rózsahegyi will reminisce about her grandfather and will show one of his memorable movies “Te csak pipálj, Ladányi!” (rough translation: Carry on Ladányi, smoke your pipe!), made in 1938. This program will be in Hungarian. Memberships for 2005. Please remember to renew your membership ($30 family, $20 single) before January 27! We welcome new members. We Wish You a merry Christmas and a happy new Year! 4
