THE MESSENGER Newsletter of the Kossuth Club March, 2003. Vol. 9. No. 3. Donation to HUPE. The Club donated 500 dollars to the Physical Education and Sport Sciences School of Semmelweis University (formerly the Hungarian University of Physical Education) in Budapest for a memorial to be erected for the 1848-49 Hungarian War of Independence on the campus. Each year on March 15th and October 6 , two significant dates in the 19. century struggle for freedom and independence by the Hungarian people, students and faculty pay homage to the memory of that war. Artist Lajos Berek will carve the memorial from oak in the shape of wooden headboards, a traditional Transylvanian “tombstone”. The name of our club will be preserved on a plaque in the foundation of the memorial. The Liszt Festival. The American Liszt Society (ALS) will hold its annual Festival on March 27 through 29 on the campus of the University of Florida in Gainesville.
