THE MESSENGER Newsletter of the Kossuth Club November, 2002. Vol. 8. No. 8. Benefit Concert for the Liszt Academy. The Kossuth Club is sponsoring a benefit concert for the Franz Liszt Academy of Music by internationally acclaimed pianist Bálint Vázsonyi at 5:00 p. m. on December 1 at the Mildred Sainer Music and Arts Pavilion at New College. The recital will honor Ernst von Dohnányi (1877-1960), Hungarian composer, concert pianist, conductor and music educator, who was professor of music at Florida State University from 1949 to 1960. Dohnányi, „the Liszt of the 20th century” and director of the Liszt Academy from 1934 to 1943, was a „dispalced person” in Europe after the Second World War and found refuge and a job (at age 72!) in the State of Florida. FSU honored the 125. anniversary of his birth earlier this year with a threeday International Festival. After his graduation from the Liszt Academy in 1956, Mr. Vázsonyi escaped from Hungary, came to Tallahassee to study with Dohnányi, and was his last pupil. Mrs. Vázsonyi, the former Barbara Whittington of Sarasota graduated from Sarasota High School before she enrolled at FSU to major in music. Mr. Vázsonyi’s first American concert was in Sarasota in 1959. He holds a Ph. D. in history and is the Director for the Center for the American Founding. Concert tickets in advance at $20 per person may be purchased from the Kossuth Club (P.O. Box 19774, Sarasota, FL 34276). Tax-deductible donations are gratefully accepted. Guided Tour of Szabadka (Subotica), Vojvodina. Our regular November meeting will be Thursday, November 21 at 4:30 p. m. at the Selby Public Library auditorium (1331 First Street, Sarasota). Landscape architect Agnes Szabó will present an illustrated „walk” through the historic Hungarian town of Szabadka (now Subotica in Serbia), where she was bom. Ms. Szabó earned her diploma in 2001 at St. Stephen University in Budapest and is currently an associate of RMPK Group, a landscape design firm in Sarasota. She is the daughter of Magda Szabó, director of the Bolyai School in Szabadka. It is one of several Hungarian minority schools in the Carpathian Basin that the Kossuth Club supports with scholarships and grants. Donations received at this program are dedicated to the Bolyai School in Szabadka. Memberships for 2003. Please renew your membership before January 30. Family membership is $30, individual membership is $20 per annum. 4
