THE MESSENGER Newsletter of the Kossuth Club April, 2002. Vol. 8. No. 4. Kossuth in America. One hundred and fifty years ago Lajos Kossuth, exiled governor of Hungary and the leader of the 1848-1849 Hungarian War of Independence traveled for six months in the United States and was hailed by the American people as a fighter for freedom and human rights. The American War of Independence was won barely sixty years before and the people responded to Kossuth, a great orator and a charismatic person, with empathy. Kossuth was trying to secure support, both financial and political, to re-establish Hungarian independence and although he enjoyed great popularity, he did not achieve his objective. He died in exile at the age of 92 and only his remains were returned to his beloved Hungary. As the year 2002 marks both the bicentennial of the birth of Kossuth and the sesquicentennial of his visit in America, the Kossuth Club of Sarasota commemorated the historic events with a solemn program. The Hungarian Embassy in Washington was represented by Fábián Józsa, special assistant to Ambassador Géza Jeszenszky, and Gyöngyi Szenáky Józsa cultural attaché. They presented a traveling exhibit consisting of 37 panels of historic photographs and documents, and in a moving speech Mr. Józsa chronicled the life and times of Kossuth. Artists Károly Sziki and Viola Szabó from Eger, ably assied by Ildikó Nyeste of Sarasota, presented a sensitive portayal of the old Kossu<‘ .n exile through his letters and contemporary newspaper articles. Musical interludes made their program a truly unique and unforgettable theatrical experience. April Programs.
