A címerfestmények reprodukcióihoz a címereknek – elsősorban – a miniatúrák alapján készült magyar nyelvű leírásait is mellékelem, illetve, ha képi ábrázolás nem állt rendelkezésemre, akkor a címerleírást közvetlenül a latin szöveg alapján készítettem el. A magyar nyelvű címerleírásoknál arra törekedtem, hogy minél tömörebb, szabályozottabb leírást készítsek, csak a feltétlenül szükséges részletekre szorítkozva, egy mondatban összefoglalva a pajzs, a sisakdísz és a sisaktakarók lehetőség szerint mindig ugyanúgy megfogalmazott leírását. Ez a kötet Szabolcs vármegye és az ott élő nemes családok egy részének történetére vonatkozó leglátványosabb iratokat, a címeresleveleiket vonultatja fel, reményeim szerint sok, a megye története iránt érdeklődő olvasónak okozva ezzel örömet. Introduction The sixty-four patents of arms presented in this volume have been selected on the basis of their publication by the historical Szabolcs county. They were scattered in many places in the course of the last several centuries. As a result, four of the sixty-four are kept in the Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County Archives, one in the Csongrád-Csanád County Archives, ten in the Hajdú-Bihar County Archives, two in the Heves County Archives, twelve in the collection of Szabolcs county patents of arms in the Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County Archives, and the last thirty-five in the Central Archives of the National Archives of Hungary: one in the archives of the Hungarian Chancellery, one in the archives of the Hungarian Locumtenential Council, one in the pre-Mohács Collection, better known as the Archives of Diplomatics, five in the collection of the archives of the Hungarian Treasury titled Neo-regestrata acta, seven in the archives of the Kárász, Károlyi, Mokcsay, Szögyény-Marich, Teleki and Ujfalussy families and twenty in the collection of Hungarian patents of arms. These charters range from the Forgách patent of arms issued in 1525, just before the Battle of Mohács, to the renewal of the privileges and seal of the market town of Nyíregyháza in 1837. They include grants by Princes of Transylvania and Kings of Hungary as well, and among patents of different families the grant of arms made in 1714 to Szabolcs county itself is also present. The remarkable patent of arms granted by Prince Stephen Bocskai to 9254 Hajduks at once was published by Szabolcs county as well as the one of the Mikecz family, who played an important role in the history of the town of Nyíregyháza and of the county as well. I do not transcribe the complete Latin texts of the charters for two reasons. One is that sixty-four long texts of the patents would have unnecessarily multiplied the size of the present volume, and the other is that the comparative diplomatic examination of early modern Hungarian grants of arms shows that by the second half of the 16th century their texts became increasingly similar. Names, blazons and dates differ of course, but otherwise the Latin texts, usually compiled from templates, are in most cases practically identical. The selected patents of arms are presented in the form of regests, which contain in Hungarian and English all primary data, such as the names of the grantor and the grantees, the exact subject of the grant, the date and place of issue, the type of seal attached and the data of the county publication(s). 26
