relations. Some noblemen from Szabolcs and Szatmár counties were often involved as royal delegates in cases concerning properties of Máramaros. JÁNOS N. FODOR: Social and Political Changes in Szabolcs County in the 13 th-14 th Centuries By that time the former centres of castellanies had lost their significance. There were two regions of castellanies in Szabolcs county: the castellany of Szabolcs and that of Borsova. The development of provincials contributed to the disintegration of the comitat. At the end of the 13 th century Szabolcs county got into the sphere of interest of Aba Amadé then into that of the Borsa family. Aba turned against László IV so he came into conflict with the royalist Balogsemjén clan. Later Simon Kallói and after that István became the castellans of Szabolcs. They both belonged to the Balogsemjén clan. People belonging to the Gutkeled family turned away from the Borsas, who were their former masters. Together with Károly I they also fought against Palatine Kopasz in the battle of Debrecen. Bereck's son, János became the castellan of Bihar county for his services. After 1312 the noblemen of Szabolcs helped to restore order and put an end to the anarchic state of affairs. A new layer of barons emerged follwing the fights. The development of the layer of lower nobility was also an interesting process, which is illustrated by examples from the county by the author. As the dependents of the king only could turn directly to the king with their court cases, they got out of the castellan's legal authority and could set up their own court. It was called the sheriffs court. Developed in the 13 th century this institution helped to change the public administration of the county. Their relationship as neighbours was not peaceful at all. Hostility and contention between the two families lasted for centuries.
