DUDÁS, LÁSZLÓ: The Relationship between the Soldiers and Greek Catholic Church at the Turn of the 18th and 19th Century Several records reflecting the relationship between the soldiers and the church dating back to the time of French-Prussian, Prussian-Austrian and Napoleonic wars can be found in the archives of the Greek Catholic archdeaconry of Hajdúdorog or Lower-Szabolcs. Both joining the army and recruiting were important events in the life of the individual and the community. The church and its priests had to deal with the case of recruitment. András Bacsinszky, the bishop of Munkács wrote a letter to the priests of his diocese about the recruitment. It turns ont from this letter that the parsons had to encourage the youth to enter the army. The priests themselves made a list of men who were liable to military service. A report was made on how many soldiers of Greek Catholic religion fought in each parish belonging to the archdeaconry in the French war between 1792 and 1794. In 1798 Palatine József turned to the archdeacon of Dorog asking him to help to collect the amount of oats that Szabolcs county had to give to the army from the estates lying in Szabolcs county. The bishop prohibited his priests from giving refuge to deserters. Amnesty was declared to deserters on ecclesiastic forums several times. When the deserters and the widows got married again, the priests had to act with deliberation in case the widows of the soldiers should remarry too early. KUJBUS MECSEI, ÉVA: Meteorological Data in Nyíregyháza at the Beginning of the 19th Century Weather has always had a strong influence over people's life from ancient time. Besides people's knowledge of nature and weather-lore, based on observation and left from father to son, the need for the scientific cognition of the weather first emerged in the second half of the 19th century. While meteorological observations aiming at weather forecast began in Nyíregyháza in 1866, all over the country from the 1870's. Data on the weather of earlier times can be found only in the remaining sources of the town. They are the minute-books and documents of the magistracy, the diaries of Sámuel Susztek, a teacher in Nyíregyháza, the evangelistic church and works on the history of the town and weather. These sources recorded only the anomalies. The records describe mainly little parts of the events. There are words and sentences referring to the weather in the description of disasters, notes on the starvation which was due to drought and when the history of earthquakes was recorded. Further references can also be found in municipal decrees determining the starting day of the agricultural work, the harvest and driving animals into the fields. We can read longer and more detailed weather reports of the time only in diaries. Unfortunately there are some years which have no meteorological data at all in the sources that we know of so far.
