FERENC SÍPOS Additions to the History of the 48th Battalion (Documents of the Military Career of Ferenc Sípos of Vallaj) In the first half of the 19th century the members of the Sipos family of Vállaj, Szatmár County — who obtained their nobiliary particle from this village — lived scattered at different settlements of Szatmár County (Nyírbátor, Balkány, Nyírmihálydi, Pócspetri, Kisléta and Újfehértó), Pest County (Kecskemét), Csongrád County (Szentes) and Békés County (Békés, Szarvas, Szeghalom, Gyula and Mezőberény). In 1848-49 almost all the adult male members of the family answered the call of the homeland. They almost all participated in the War of Independence in some way, and four of them distinguished themselves as soldiers or in the administration of the new republic. Pál Sípos from Kecskemét was a lieutenant of the 16th — Károlyi-Hussars, Antal Sípos from Békés was a first lieutenant of the 6th — Württemberg — Hussars and Ferenc Sípos from Nyírmihálydi was a first lieutenant of the (new) 52nd Battalion at the end of the war. Sándor Sípos from Szentes was the first Sub-Prefect of Békés County in 1849. The author publishes bibliographical data and documents related to the military career of Ferenc Sípos from Nyírmihálydi. As Ferenc Sípos served in the Voluntary National Guard Battalion of Szabolcs County — and in the 48th Battalion formed from the former unit — for an extended period of time, the documents here published may serve as additions to the history of the two units. PÉTER TAKÁCS Péter Krasznay's Mémoires on 1848-1849 Péter Krasznay — after several efforts — finalized the text of his mémoires in the early 20th century, between 1905 and 1916. he called his mémoires a diary and he left it to the generations following him. The author was born in 1830 and died in 1916. The most exciting chapter of his long life was, undoubtedly, the War of Independence of 1848^49. the 18th-year old student of Kemecse, who studied law in Eger, joined the 10th Batallion, organized in Szabolcs County. After a short training in Debrecen the batallion was sent to the southern part of the country, where they fought several battles with the Serbian rebels. In October 1848 Krasznay was transferred to the 25th Batallion where, as a corporal, he participated in the fighting in the Transdadubian area and around Szolnok. He also fought in the Spring Campaign. At the siege of Buda he distinguished himself with his valour and bravery. Maj. Sámuel Rakovszky invited him over to the 48th batallion, and promoted him to Lieutenant. This event was the most cherished memory of the young nobleman of Kemecse, especially because his brother, capt. Gábor Krasznay, also served at this batallion. 48th Batallion marched to Komarom after the capture of Buda, and continued the fight against the Austrians gen. György Klapka surrendered the fortress. The most important value of Péter Krasznay's mémoires is the faithful description of the events of ordinary, daily life. According to his own remarks, he did it exclusively for the benefit of his own family and not for the general public. He therefore makes no effort to magnify the events or to attribute more significance to his own person and deeds — he simply tells
