ISTVÁN FODOR The Archives of the Voivodina at the Threshold of the New Millennium, with Special Attention to the Historical Archives of Zenta The network of the archives in the Voivodina was created in 1946. Since formerly unimaginable social and political changes have taken place in the territory of Yugoslavia. These changes, fortunately, left the authorizations and the areas belonging to each archives, unaffected. Ten archives have served the collection, processing and protection of the documents in the Voivodina in the past half century. At the end of the millennium there are 42,000 m of shelves loaded with documents in these archives. The documents are divided into 6,000 fonds. A standardized list of fonds, comprising all the archives of Yugoslavia, was published in 1977. Since then almost all archives in the Voivodina have published their own, updated registers. These registers show that each of these archives contain materials in Hungarian — in the archives of Zenta, for instance, Hungarian documents amount to 35 % of the total material. Out of the total staff of 117 working in the archives, 35 are able to handle and process Hungarian materials (according to 1992 statistics; since that time this proportion has somewhat worsened). Research into the materials in the archives are not particularly difficult for domestic researchers — foreigners, however, need the permit of the Foreign Office to visit the Yugoslavian archives. No organized training of archivists (i. e. in schools) is going on in the Voivodina and Serbia. Generally historians, teachers, or economists obtain the required qualifications by spending a year in one of the archives and then passing an exam. The associations of archivists in the Voivodina and Serbia make efforts to eliminate the shortcomings of the training system by publishing professional periodicals and organizing frequent conferences and meetings. The Historical Archives of Zenta is located at Tiszamente in the Bácska area. The headquarters are in Zenta, where ten archivists work, and there is a branch office at Obecse with a staff of five. At the two facilities 4,300 m shelves of documents, arranged in 753 fonds. The research into local history and the publishing activities of the Zenta Archives are of particular importance for the whole Hungarian population of the Voivodina. The social background for these activities is provided by the association of the Friends of Gyula Dudás Museum and Archives as an NGO. The professional work is done by the staff of the museum and the archives. In addition to innumerable maps, postcards, and small bulletins, close to 80 publications have been issued, arranged in two series — the Zenta Monographic Booklets and the Zenta Booklets — in the past forty years. A small monograph of the region has also been published. Regional quiz games have been organized. We intend to compile the bibliography of the Hungarian publications and publications related to Hungary and the Hungarians after 1945 in cooperation with the Hungarian Educational Association in Yugoslavia. The work shall probably last several years. VERONIKA NOVAK The Organization of the Archives in Slovakia The network of the Slovakian archives was created in 1954. The archives work under the auspices of the Home Office. There are 7 regional and 38 municipal archives, which are
