Bela Katona FROM EDUCATION TO THE HISTORY OF THE TOWN (A draft of the career of J6zsef Margocsy on his 80th birthday) The study follows the career of Jozsef Margocsy in five chapters. In part one his work as a teacher and head teacher, his textbooks and publications in the field of education are discussed. Chapter two deals with his valuable critical writings, initially focussed on Mor J6kai, later on Zsigmond Moricz and other authors of our county (Barna Sipkay, Mihaly Vaci, Lajos Galambos etc.). Chapter three surveys the literary traditions of Szabolcs-Szatmar-Bereg County, identifying the most important tasks of research into local history. The attention of J6zsef Marg6csy has turned towards the history of his native town during the past two decades. He processes the history and traditions of Nyiregyhaza, and everything else one may need to know about this town on an encyclopedic level in a large number of articles and the four-volume Utcdk, terek, emlektdbldk (Streets, Squares and Memorial Tablets). The last chapter surveys literary writings by Jozsef Marg6csy, and his accounts of his years in the army and in the POW camps, based upon his Otven honap utdszcsizmdban (Fifty Months in a Sapper's Boots). The reason for this was the desperate need for preserving their lands and serfs, and the heavy burden of debts on the domains.
