A User’s Guide to the Catalogue The catalogue provides descriptions for 364 works in 443 volumes, including 102 incunabula and 262 antiquities. The user-friendly catalogue is designed to ensure the most thorough exploration of its items. Therefore the catalogue of the Szombathely Diocese Library is trying to make the items traceable, detectable and usable by recording the item ’s individual characteristics. When compiling the catalogue, another highly significant aspect was to ensure usability. Therefore certain repetitions were unavoidable to make the catalogue convenient to use. For example, with each colligated item, the description is repeated to spare the user the nuisance of turning pages following the references. The structure of the catalogue is arranged in line with the principles of the alphabetical ordering. When making the choice for the form of the entry, we chose to follow the practice of the National Széchenyi Library (OSZK) and that of the Collection of Hungarian Incunabula (CIH). Users can find Greek names in a transcribed version, whereas the names of monarchs and saints are written the Latin way. Christian names always precede family names written identically. As incunabula and antiquities are listed together, descriptions had to be unified. We recorded titles as shown on the particular item. If there were no such names, we decided to stick to the unified reference generally accepted in the literature. As a rule we always adopted the texts letter for letter, as their originals were, decoding ligatures and abbreviations without any additional markings. The structure of the catalogue 1. Item numbers are indicated above and to the left of the description, marked by Arabic numbers 2. The stock reference number is made up of two parts. If the item has the marking ‘Bibliotheca Seminarii Sabariensis’ together with its original reference usually on a square-shaped sticker, we use this one. If there is no such marking, then we did not use it. The second part is the actual, present day reference. 3. Bibliographical data a.) Within the oeuvre of the same author the individual items are listed in an alphabetical order. If the author’s name is part of the title, then it was ignored. 25
