PROPHCHNDH The cult of military leaders and heroes was grew out of all proportions during the war. Propaganda mementoes adorned with the leaders of the Austro-Hungarian army encouraged the hinterland to make increasingly generous sacrifices. Small articles of everyday use, portraying the symbol of the unbreakable brotherhood in arms, the "Supreme Commanders [i.e. the monarchs], made their way into everyday life owing to war propaganda. The many individually and mass-produced jewellery, bracelets and rings attested to the financial sacrifice made on the altar of the country; items, to wear and to keep and cards with pictures of frontline soldiers on the front bore witness to wartime integrity in homes on the home front. IDE (IL 1,1«.Ill URCENI RELIEF FEND The Augusta Urgent Reiief Fund, the most successful and versatile charity organisation was headed by Duchess Augusta, wife of Archduke Joseph, during the war. As its name suggests, the Fund was out to provide fast aid in the form of money, clothes, food, fuel for heating, and offered aid to the disabled, the wounded, soldiers on the front and their families, widows and orphans. They founded healthcare institutions and set up hospital trains. Also, they initiated and hosted charity events, often in cooperation with other charity organisations.
