Archive recordings in a new guise In many cases the record factory archives preserve treasures whose cultural value was long unappreciated. They are gen­erally recordings that, for various reasons, did not or were not able to receive appropriate recognition in their time. Performers whose recordings are not released on their own album, but are included on thematic selections at the time of box sets are particularly important. Folk and world musk Folk music recordings were among the first to appear in the early catalogues; they were regarded as exotic folklore. Today these record­ings are of inestimable value in studying music before urbanisation. The newly released folk recordings are extremely varied. Original material can be found in this category alongside modernised folk(y) music. World music has become a popular music category. In some cases it fuses the music from dis­tant regions.
